I have to say I really love it when I get my hands on a home that has not been updated since the 1970's because the transformation is so big! This house needed all the bathrooms updated as well as the kitchen. Today I am going to show you the kitchen and half bath remodel, and then next month I will talk about the two bathrooms. Spoiler alert-their some of my favorite bathrooms!
The kitchen was seriously lacking in storage and functionality. The overall foot print of kitchen needed to stay the same but we were able to make some updates to increase the functionality.
Storage, storage, storage is always a key focus when designing a kitchen. For this kitchen, we had to utilize every square inch of space that we have. The first thing we did was take down the upper cabinets and added a peninsula instead. We opted for forgo seating here and instead added another bank of cabinets on the back side for more storage.
We also added shelves at the end of the peninsula so she could display some of her collectibles. And of course, I always add garbage pull outs and spice drawers in any kitchen I do!
We repeated the open shelving concept on the end of the dishwasher cabinet to add in more storage there as well.
One of my biggest pet peeves in kitchen design is not having the sink in front of a window. I mean, who wants to stare at a blank wall or have a cabinet protruding in your face while you are washing dishes? However, I realize that sometimes due to the layout of the house, that's not always possible. In this house, we could not move the location of the sink so instead I added a row of floating shelves above it. This give my client easy access to her favorite coffee mug every morning and solves the problem of having a cabinet protruding out!
In this kitchen we also updated all the appliances and lighting to complete the transformation. Want to know my favorite thing in this kitchen? It is the acrylic knobs we picked out. My client loves glass knobs, but to help cut down on cost, we went with the acrylic version and they really fit her personality.
Directly behind the kitchen is a half bath that was in desperate need of an update. I wanted to take the coastal theme in a slightly different direction here. Coastal doesn't always have to be blues and greens. In this bathroom, I decided to incorporate some more neutral tones and found this BEAUTIFUL tile from Porcelanosa. (Little side note-If you're local I am going to carrying Porcelanosa tile in our new showroom!)
The vessel sink is a show stopper and the glass pendant keeps this small space feeling open and airy!
So there you have it, our latest design project. Make sure you're following me on social media (Facebook, instagram) Stay tuned for next month's post where I will be showing you the bathroom renovations from this house!
