Did you know that mudrooms/laundry rooms are now being called “disinfection stations”? Sounds a little clinical to me, so I’m just going to keep calling it a laundry room. And your laundry room is the hardest working room in your house.
Whether you live in the Mississippi Gulf Coast like me and deal with sand everywhere, or you're up north dealing with snow, most laundry rooms need to serve several functions. It’s a landing zone for when you come into the house for shoes, purses, keys, backpacks, and all the things! It’s also a laundry area and can serve as secondary food storage.
When I was designing this house, I purposely put the laundry room/mudroom directly off of the garage. That way, when you enter the house, you can drop off your keys, shoes, bags before you walk in and dump it somewhere else!
I designed these custom built-ins to provide a place to hang up bags and put away shoes. There’s also a spot for a second refrigerator and additional storage for cleaning supplies and large bags of dog food!
Laundry was another key factor to consider when designing the mudroom. The cabinets above the washer and dryer provide storage and the additional sink and hidden laundry basket are key to keeping the space clean and providing a spot to hide things when friends and family come over!
There also needed to be a spot to hang clothes up for steam cleaning and somewhere to hang clothes up that needed to air dry. I chose black, industrial rods and hooks for this purpose. It provides the functionality needed while giving the space the edge they were looking for. I really love the tone on tone with the green in here as well as the old world feel the tile gives.
Even though the laundry room needs to function, it also needs to look good. It is a space I am going to see every single day and spend some time in-i’m looking at you laundry-then I want it to at least be an enjoyable space to be in.
It's the little details like the special knobs that are all a little bit different and the coastal baskets that really make the space feel warm and inviting.
Is your mudroom functioning for you? Do you love the way it looks? If it’s time for an update, all you have to do is schedule your First Steps Design Consultation.
I look forward to hearing from you,
